Anything in /var/log/system.log ?

What's the exit code for xterm?  (Start xterm from Terminal.app and run 'echo $?' after it exits)

Please describe exactly what you mean.  How are you starting X11?  How are you starting xterm?  Do you see xterm on your screen ever?
