Was there a crash report, or did it just quit? If it crashed, please
send me the crash log in a bug report. If it quit, then it's likely
that gnome crashed which made the client process quit which make xinit
tell the server to quit.
Check your logs (/var/log/system.log)

I have had quartz stop (kill it self) when gnome has been running
and has not activity. I use spaces and bring up gnome on space1. I
run other applications on space 2 or 3 or 4. For some reason X11
stops. I am befuddled by this since before the Xquartz release this
did not happen.
