I didn't see a performance loss upgrading my 867MHz 15in Titanium Powerbook
from Tiger to Leopard. If anything it ran faster.
I have 2GB RAM in the machine, and replaced the original HD with a 120GB
unit, putting the original HD in an external box so I had a fall back if
everything went Horribly Wrong(tm) -- which it didn't.
When I broke down and bought a new 2.66GHz 15in Macbook Pro last august, I
did a Superduper backup of the TiBook to an external LaCie quadra, and was
able to run Migration Assistant to get all my data to the new box.
I used the commercial program iPartition to divvy up the LaCie, and it
surprised me by being able to switch back and forth between PPC and Intel
booting on the external drive. It also allowed me to resize the original
partition on the MacBook Pro to 80GB, and make a new case-sensitive
partition for my real work (Adobe's brain-dead software won't install on
case-sensitive file systems).
The LaCie Quadra drives have both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 which is
really nice when going between old and new Macs.
One caveat that bit me when I did the Tiger->Leopard transition where I did
a fresh install of Leopard on a new HD is Migration Assistant didn't work
transferring an existing user account to the new machine. I had to do some
manual fiddling and rsync to get the data over. I now use a user ``admin''
on all new Macs with administrator privileges, then can migrate the real
accounts from backups or other machines as they don't conflict.
