adding mime-type to mime database

I am using Gwyddion under X11 on 10.6.5 to open some STM data, and we would like to have the previews show up in the open dialog. To do this, we are told (by the Gwyddion developers) that we need to add an item to the mime-database, and the command for this is:
sudo update-mime-database /opt/local/share/mime (as Gwyddion was installed via Macports) The equivalent works on Linux, but it does nothing on OS X.
I get the following message:
Note that '/opt/local/share' is not in the search path set by the XDG_DATA_HOME and XDG_DATA_DIRS environment variables, so applications may not be able to find it until you set them. The directories currently searched are:
- /var/root/.local/share - /usr/local/share/ - /usr/share/
Also At the moment, I am trying to work out where and how OS X allows to add mime types for X11 applications. I cannot find how to add /opt/local/share to the search path for mime types, nor can I find another version of the update-mime-database command in the searched folders.
Can anyone help?
Yours,
James
