Did you see Eric's reaction to my initial mail? OOo indeed has its own
font database; fonts do not become available until you install them
there.

Eric did suggest I should report this as an X11 bug. Good idea trying
to reproduce it with something simple ... but I have this hunch it's
to do with OOo being a PPC 1.1.2 app...
