Curiously, I used to have this problem all the time, but
I don't think I have seen it in the last couple of years,
ever since I finally upgraded from Panther to Leopard
on my PowerPC G5 desktop system in the summer of
2009.
I wonder if iCal has to be running for this to happen.
I have certainly never explicitly opened iCal in the
last 2 years, since I have absolutely no use for it, so
I wonder if that is why. I wonder if exiting iCal (or
removing it as an extreme measure) would fix the problem.
I wonder if iCal has any settings that might affect this,
such as how often it checks for stuff. Browsing its plist
might be useful. If you actually use iCal, a solution might
be to only open it when you need it, then immediately
exit it when done.

I think this is a wontfix, due to calendar, even though it is the

I have a number of X11 windows open, and will be operating in one,

ideas on how to figure out what's going on?
