I have read the migration instructions in the Fink web page but I
am wondering if this is an opportunity to migrate to MacPorts also.
I have never tried Macports in the past, so I would like to have
some opinions on it, especially in comparison to Fink.
(1) Is there such a thing like better or worse between MacPorts and
Fink?
I can only speak for myself, and all I can say is why I migrated from
fink: I got irritated by fink packages being seriously outdated,
while macports (actualle it was called darwinports then) tended to be
more up to date. Plus, I felt I had a better understanding of how
macports worked. But all this seems like an eternity ago, so things
may well have changed. If you want to be more confused, throw brew
into the mix, so now you have three competing systems to choose from.
(2) Will the update break the existing X11 installation (latest
version for Leopard) and if yes, what should I do to restore it?
It shouldn't, but I would strongly recommend installing xquartz
(http://xquartz.macosforge.org/).
(2) If I decide to go Macports, how do I "eradicate" the Fink
installation? Is it as simple as trashing the /sw directory or are
there traces elsewhere also?
As far as I know, removing /sw is enough. But really, you should
check the fink website or ask their mailing list about that.
