They grey screen is because you have enabled fullscreen mode.
The lack of $DISPLAY is because you have disabled the LaunchAgent or have overridden the value set by the launch agent.
What OS are you running? What X11 are you using (shipped by Apple, MacPorts, or XQuartz.MacOSForge.org)?
