It is,
$ ls -lt .xinitrc.d/99-startup.sh
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jac2349 staff 47 Jun 12 17:28 .xinitrc.d/99-startup.sh
I also changed permissions on ~/.Xauthority to make it owned by my
user and group,
now Console.app is telling me "Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key" instead
of "No protocol specified".
Oh, and now XQuartz doesn't even get to the point of showing me an xterm,
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=njtHz0Au
It is now restarting itself every time I force quit it... not sure how
to log out under these circumstances...

Not that I know of! But I'm happy to try that version and see if it
fixes anything.
