To review: on some configurations of Mac/OS X/XQuartz, XView-based
applications will crash depending on whether they are run from an
"xterm" terminal window or a "terminal" app. Numerous users have noted
this.
Interestingly, I've heard that if an XView-based application works
from terminal.app, it will work from an xterm launched from the
command-line
of terminal.app ... this is probably an important clue.
My development and testing systems are Mac minis running OS 10.5.8,
and they don't have this problem. Likewise, a new Macbook Pro in the
lab here is also fine. So, I don't have access to a system which
reproduces the problem. But, I made a simple test program anyway.
It can be found at the bottom of our "NMRPipe" software download page:
http://spin.niddk.nih.gov/bax/software/NMRPipe/install
The specific file is:
http://spin.niddk.nih.gov/bax/software/NMRPipe/install/xview_mac.tar
It contains "xvmessage.app" and source code, and a copy of the XView
library. This simple application uses XView to display a pop-up window
with a line of text, for example:
xvmessage.app hello world
