I'm seeing only the occasional crash after switching screens (in all
cases that appears to happen when the X11 server was started with a
lower-resolution screen).
1) I go to the login screen
2) I disconnect the current external monitor. Doing this from the
login screen means that my windows remain on the screen they were, and
are not all collapsed on the internal screen
3) put the computer to sleep via the Sleep button. I prefer to tell
the software to put the hardware to sleep, rather to have the hardware
to ask the software to put it to sleep.
4) Wake up the computer on the new location
5) connect the external screen
6) log back into my account
I find that I have far fewer problems switching external
monitors with my Macbook when I use deep sleep (hibernation)
rather than regular quick sleep. I use the Deep Sleep dashboard
widget to initiate hibernation. Note that this is software
telling the hardware to sleep. I started using deep sleep mainly
because the computer would occasionally have trouble waking up
from quick sleep if the monitor configuration had changed from
when it went to sleep. In any case, I've never had a problem
with X11 crashing when waking from hibernation with a different
monitor configuration.
