Probe the root window for the _NET_SUPPORTING_WM_CHECK property?
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/758648/find-the-name-of-the-x-window-manager
http://standards.freedesktop.org/wm-spec/wm-spec-1.3.html#id2506451
As a side remark, quartz-wm does not appear to conform:
; xprop -root _NET_SUPPORTING_WM_CHECK
_NET_SUPPORTING_WM_CHECK(WINDOW): window id # 0x400001
; xprop -id 0x400001 _NET_WM_NAME
_NET_WM_NAME: not found.
