It shouldn't do that because startx should be picking :1 rather than :0 as DISPLAY because of this code:
# Automatically determine an unused $DISPLAY
d=0
while true ; do
[ -e /tmp/.X$d-lock ] || break
d=$(($d + 1))
done
defaultdisplay=":$d"
unset d
So what's the deal with your /tmp/.X0-lock?
