In other words, sometimes it happens while I'm typing. Other times I've typed just fine, then gone to use another app (for example, Safari), then I click back to reactivate an X11 app and immediately lose focus to Dictation before I can even begin to type. This probably explains why, anecdotally, I feel like the focus issue is worse than it once was---I suspect I used to be bothered by only the iCal timer, and now Dictation is also causing problems.

Following up my post last night:
- I had to disable Dictation completely to avoid the focus loss issue. Modifying or disabling the shortcut key was insufficient.
- Tonight I have been "focus-loss free" until a couple of minutes ago, due to this event:
2012-12-21 00:31:06.532 Python[5210:f07] activated Google Software Update (com.google.Keystone.Agent)
So it seems we have at least three different programs---iCal Helper, Dictation, and Google Software Update---that trigger this problem with XQuartz.
Regards,
Brian
