Thanks for your help, I think you've identified the problem, but I'm having trouble following your instructions. On the Ubuntu system it's using UTF8, and locally on the mac $LANG was undefined/blank. I did the control-right-click in an X11 window, but I get a small window where I can only see a tiny portion of the menu. I recall using this menu a *long* time ago when I first installed X11, but haven't had occasion to use it since. Any idea how to get that window to expand? Can I set the $LANG variable in a startup file like .Xdefaults? I've never bothered with the differences between unicode and ascii before, this is the first time it's been an issue.

Also, hm, I don't recall if stock Lion xterm handles Unicode (although I think it's recent enough that it should), but check the Control+right mouse button menu for the UTF8 options. (Actually, I just did that myself with XQuartz and it appears they default off. Turn on UTF8 Encoding and possibly UTF8 Fonts).
