BACKGROUND: I've developed a few specialized PostScript programs using Mac OS X (Lion). Saving a copy of a PostScript text file, changing its extension to .ps, and then double clicking the file icon, launches Preview which displays the result as PDF and is just what would be printed, if sent and executed by a PostScript printer. That is very useful to me, but is just part of what I need. (An aside: Preview's behavior is different if the file is opened from within Preview. It converts the format of the file, which is not what is needed.)
When there is an error in a program being developed, an interactive session (two-way communication) with the printer would be quite helpful to locate the source of the error.
QUESTION: Anyone know how to set up an interactive session with the networked printer? (I knew how in the old days before Mac OS X. I hoped X11 provided the tools.)
PS: My current workaround is: send the PostScript text file that contains errors to a PC (I use one with Windows XP), connect to the networked printer using Hyperterminal, and send the text file to the printer. The printer prints the PostScript interpreter's error messages, and returns information to the PC screen if I write to its standard output (e.g., if pstack is included in the file). (This approach wastes paper, is slow, and violates my bias for Apple.)
Thanks.
Regards,
Burt.
