but then it connects OK, with X11 forwarding.
But this should not be necessary. According to man sshd_config:
XAuthLocation
Specifies the full pathname of the xauth(1) program. The default
is /usr/X11R6/bin/xauth.
Something fishy here, at least sshd_config is lying about the default.
