My test on Mountain Lion and XQuartz 2.7.4 was done with 11perf - X11 performance program, version 1.2
I don't have the stock X11.app that came with Lion because it was auto updated to X11 2.6.3 and I didn't save a copy. I do have several X11.app's and XQuartz's on my MacBook Air 2011 running Mountain Lion. Here are the x11perf results for those.
X11.app 2.3.6 (copied from Snow Leopard) - it works!
X11.app 2.6.3 (from Lion) - fails with BadMatch
XQuartz 2.7.1 - fails with BadMatch
XQuartz 2.7.4 - fails with BadMatch
So the stock X11.app that shipped with Lion and worked a long time ago must of been prior to X11.app 2.6.3, hope this helps.

The "stock X11.app that shipped with Mac OS X Lion" was XQuartz 2.6.4. Can you test what version of XQuartz introduced this regression? 2.6.4 to 2.7.4 were a lot of version jumps.
What x11perf test are you running?
