I've run into an (admittedly weird) problem with X-Windows and/or
XQuartz recently. In a nutshell, after successfully being able to launch
X11 client apps for about 10 minutes, I suddenly can't launch any more
apps from within that console until I shut down the console session and
restart it.
This is an ssh security mechanism, and not something XQuartz has control over. It's also no longer enough to use "ssh -Y" like it used to be.
There is in recent ssh an undocumented configuration parameter "ForwardX11Timeout". Something like
ForwardX11Timeout 10h
in /etc/ssh_config or ~/.ssh/config should help. (Elsenet I am seeing 596h recommended as the largest timeout that doesn't overflow.)
