Looks like something on the "client" machine is resetting the DISPLAY variable. Are you using bash for a shell? Check .bashrc and .profile, and comment out any lines setting DISPLAY.

The ssh client sets up its own display on the "client" and then forwards that to the originating machine. But this should all happen automatically when you specify "-X". Something in the "client" shell is breaking it.
