Yesterday, I upgraded my Mac Pro to OS X Mavericks. During the initial login after the upgrade, the xterm window opened as usual but during testing of my system I found that Wireshark didn’t open.
X11 and XQuartz appeared to have been recognized by OS X Mavericks as being installed but were not functional. After seeing the “Mavericks” thread on the X11-Users mailing list, I checked the X11 and XQuartz entries in Launchpad. Clicking on the XQuartz entry, I received an error indicating that I needed to download and install the software from MacForge.
I downloaded XQuartz-2.7.4.dmg from MacForge and installed the XQuartz.pkg. After installation, I tried running Wireshark again. Still no joy. Gave up for the night after examining the /opt/X11 directories. The only directory that seemed strange was /opt/X11/etc with its March 2012 creation date.
This morning I tried running Wireshark again. Instead of aborting Wireshark when it failed to start within a minute, I left it “running” and went on to other things. After about 5 minutes, the Wireshark splash screen appeared followed by its normal startup window. Since then, Wireshark starts much more quickly than it ever did under earlier OS X releases.
This makes me wonder if some X11 issues might not be related to Apple’s memory compression introduced in OS X Mavericks. I had noticed that I had logged in under two different user names that the system became unusable for a few minutes whenever you switched between users.
Another curiosity, but unrelated to this discussion group, is the need to download and install Xcode again. I had the latest version of Xcode installed on my system prior to the upgrade to OS X Mavericks.
