The OSX world tends to put "window manipulation tools", which would normally be
in a X11 window manager, into distinct addons (probably because the Apple
Desktop doesn't offer a great deal). For example, I use SizeUp, which has easy
shortcuts to size my windows to (for example) the left or right half of the
screen, or the whole screen, etc. It does not do "maximise vertically", alas,
but something out there might. Have a look around for "OSX window managers";
while crude compared to some X11 window managers, they will have the added
advantage of also letting you do stuff to normal OSX apps, not just X11
windows.
