There is no "default X server" on OS X. The OS X GUI is no more based on X11 than Windows is. If the problem still appears even after uninstalling Xquartz then it's not an Xquartz problem. It's really looking like something in the mplayer code is having trouble with the video stream of your file. Have you taken a detailed look at the mplayer command line output?

i have tried using corevideo, which loads on t separate window now (a white box, no video only audio). does XQuartz do something to the corevideo? what is the default X server on Mavericks? What was the video handled before I installed xQuartz? I have tried removing xQuartz completely as described in the FAQ (except the pkgutil --forget) and it still wouldn't correct the display problem...

Run "mplayer -vo help" to get a list of output drivers. Choose a non-X11 one. I think corevideo will work fine.
