thanks for all of the help everyone. It turned out to be a permissions
error after all. It was an ACL issue, where there was a modification
that no one could delete any files in that directory. I just had to
turn off ACL mods by typing sudo chmod -RN ~/ into terminal (when I was
in the appropriate directory). I was then able to delete the original
.log file and XQuartz opened up without a hitch. I just wanted to clear
that up in case any one in the future stumbles upon a similar issue.

Try navigating to the log in the Finder: Hold the option key down and
select Go>Library to access Library, or hit command-shift-G (Go>Go To
Folder…) and type the path(without quotes): "~/Library/Logs/X11". You
can navigate to any folder like "/etc" this way too.
Not having ownership and full write permission in ~/Library is not
normal (actually anywhere in your home folder)
You may be able to change the name right there - if not, you can try

If that doesn't work and you think you need the file, copy it
somewhere first.
X11 or some other process may have bailed and left the file busy (or
it is locked)
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app. You will need to force
delete the file; type "sudo rm -f " (yes, you need the space) and drag
the offending file onto the terminal window. It's path should show up
after the command - hit return - enter your admin password.
sudo gives you root access, this will allow you even to delete the
OS. Be careful using sudo. sudo -k will return you to a normal user.

As pointed out by Brandon Allbery (thanks Brandon!) there is in fact a
'Users/amy/Library' directory (please forgive my naivete). I can
navigate to the .log file in terminal but still do not understand why
it cannot move this file. Again, maybe this is a permissions error?
thanks in advance!
