Ok, I unchecked “Displays have separate Spaces”, logged out and back in, and the problem still exists: xterm windows created while I have just the laptop display, and haven’t been manually moved or resized, jump to the right when I plug in my second display. The only difference is that the xterms that jump off to the right of the main screen show up on the second display, so at least I can reach over and drag them back.
I find separate spaces to be extremely useful, they allow me to have a presentation running on one display while working and switching between spaces on the other display, and I’ve been willing to live with the limitations this imposes on Xquartz. But it appears that that isn’t what is causing the jumping xterm windows, since it also happens when separate spaces is disabled.
