Not a direct answer: In my experience, when a computer goes to sleep, a
remote windows displayed on it remains for some seconds after you wake
the machine. At that point, the X server realises the connection was
long ago severed with the X client (since the server was asleep and not
sending keepalives) and only then does the window disappear. So in
cases of sleep, you get to see the window for a while before it
disappears after a wake.
In the case of turning on/off my TV (adds/removes a display) the screens
will flash once or more and all too often, all of the X windows come to
the foreground.
