Actually, it looks like it was my anti-virus.

For some reason opening XQuartz was triggering BitDefender to scan a bunch
of alias files I had in a subfolder of my Documents folder that point to
files located on my server.

I'm not sure why opening XQuartz would trigger my antivirus to scan files
in a subfolder of my Documents folder, but there you go.
