After upgrading to High Sierra, XQuartz refuses to run at all, due to

<https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=103662>
Googling turned up a note that XQuartz is out of date, but the MacPorts package
xorg-server is updated. I uninstalled XQuartz and installed xorg-server. It
worked perfectly, so I compiled my X11 programs using its headers and libraries.
My programs ran, but the fonts were not anti-aliased! The code uses libXft and
the fonts were anti-aliased previously under XQuartz.
After some fruitless googling, I installed XQuartz again and compiled using its
headers and libraries. Now the fonts are rendered correctly, even though I am
still using xorg-server!
Does anybody have any ideas why the same code would behave so differently with
XQuartz libs vs xorg-server libs?
Thanks,
John Lindal
