David,
The workaround I had found is running xterm from a virtual Linux machine
on my Mac, thus avoiding XQuartz altogether - I had other problems with
tcl-tk while running graphics in ANSYS (structural software). But based
on your and Thomas' replies, I re-ran Xquartz and found that both uxterm
and xterm second windows solve the vi problem. It is only the original
xterm that creates the vi mess. But alas, I still have the graphics
problem rendering XQuartz unusable for me.

Hi David,
Using uxterm solved the problem for me. I’ll have to see if I can
make it the default in XQuartz, but for now, once I get an xterm from
XQuartz, I call uxterm to get a new window. Use ssh from the new
window and the vi mess is cleaned up.

Hi David,
I have exactly the same problem using ssh accessing a machine that is
running CentOS 7.3.1611, making it essentially unusable for vi. No
problems when I access an older computer running OpenSuSE 11.4 from
the same Mac. I am also using XQuartz 2.7.11, and my mac is at
10.12.6. Strange.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,
I’ve run into an annoyance when using ssh to access a ubuntu system.
When using vi or vim, the screen doesn’t refresh properly when
paging forward/backward using ctrl-f/ctrl-b. What happens is I get
a union of non-space characters between the old page and the new
page. So if a character is a space on the first page and in that
location a non-space character is on the second page, then the
non-space character is written. If the second page has a space, then
it doesn’t replace whatever was on the screen from the first page.
On the other hand, if I scroll one line at a time, it works
correctly (just annoying if I’m trying to go through a large file).
Any ideas how to fix this? I’m using XQuartz 2.7.11. Odd thing
is, it only does it on my macs with 10.13, my laptop that still has
10.12 does not have this problem.
Thanks…
David
