That lines up in interesting ways with my own report upthread, that I see
it when logging into gmail with Chrome, and generally not otherwise.
The common point is authentication. I wonder whether these browsers are
tied into any Apple-supplied authentication framework (mumble Touch ID
mumble), and if so, whether that framework also connects to or knows
about XQuartz. Such connections wouldn't explain the popping, exactly,
but that would at least provide a plausible pathway for it to happen.
