X11 connection drops every n minutes, how to debug?

I'm using X-Quartz on Mac OS Catalina.  X is running over SSH to a
VirtualBox session.  I'm noticing that every 10 - 15 minute the X session
is lost, however ssh is still running.  I try to invoke an X application
and there is "no display".

Has anyone else experience this?  What is the debug process for something
like this?
