Redundant settings in build settings?

Hey all,

In an effort to divine what some good recommended default build settings
are (as a baseline against which to compare my current project), I
created a new empty project in Xcode. Looking at the development build
style for this empty project, there are entries like this:

Optimization level: none
Generate debugging symbols: checked
OPTIMIZATION_CFLAGS: -O0
DEBUGGING_SYMBOLS: YES

The latter two appear to be symbolic equivalents of the former two. Why
are they duplicated like that? I found a bunch of this in my imported-
from-PB projects, and figured it was leftover from the conversion. But
to find this in a default clean project is a bit bizarre.

And... the documentation viewer provides no clueful links (that I could
find) describing the plethora of build settings in any detail. Am I
overlooking it?
