I also don't care for the fact that multiple (new) searches for the same phrase result in multiple entries in the list.

I agree with this. For the most part, the top pane is irritating and just serves as a visual distraction for me. When it does become useful is in looking at find results, but Xcode's presentation is a step down from PB's.
