Your reaction mirrors some of mine. I find Xcode scatters things around too much
in the UI. The lack of editor in the Build window is kinda weird. It means I
have to double-click on each error to open the separate editor window with the
file in it. I guess this problem is made worse for me because I'm doing Java and
Xcode doesn't support the Errors and Warnings file group for Java at this point.
The search is another thing that puzzles me. It was simple and beautiful in PB.
The old search tab is now a sheet, and as a result, you can't permanently see
what your search is, or was, which I often do. Also, it's scattered. You enter
your search in the sheet at the top of the window. You see the results in the
search results group in the lower left. Then you view a result by making a
selection in the central part of the window. In PB, all this was concisely put
together in the Find pane, and viewing past results was a simple matter to
select it in the combo box.
I have trouble with all the windows that Xcode opens. It's not because I'm
advert to having multiple windows open: I've always liked CodeWarrior. Instead I
think it's because the content of the windows doesn't fit with I'd like to be
there or the layout is akward.
I find it interesting that Apple makes these great user interfaces for consumer
software, but has so much trouble with the developer tools.
Maybe developers are more demanding?
In any case, things sometimes depend on little details and I'm looking forward
to see what the Xcode guys have in store for us in the next releases.
