I recall seeing something like this in PB under 10.2.x and it turned out
to be a bad font from OS 9 somewhere on my disk. You might want to take
a look through 'Font Book' to see if the font you are using is defined
in more than one place.
Unfortunately I cannot find my bug report email so I can only say look
for font problems.....
