xcode inserting ^S, how to stop?

I am getting an odd compile time error (error: stray '\23' in program).
When I look at my code in emacs, it appears that xcode's editor is
inserting an ascii '^S'. gcc must then be interpreting it as some kind
of return value.
Is there a way to stop xcode from continuing thin behavior?
Thanks
