Rebuilding the index and/or compiling the code have no effect on
whether the autocompletion feature works for me, unfortunately.
It strictly seems to be a function of how much code editing I have
done, as far as I can tell. After a while, it all just starts working.
No amount of pressing the "update index" button in the inspector, nor
re-compiling, seems to get auto completion working.
I'm sorry that I don't have any specific cases in which it starts
working.
Zach
As a reminder, this is with XCode 1.1, using a makefile target, and
with the source tree added recursively as file and folder references.

Specifically, some times it works and other times it doesn't even
seem turned on, and I can't figure out why this is. I can't seem to
find anything in the list archives to provide me with any clue,
either.
Could it be because your project has not had its index updated? For
me, rebuilding the index, and possibly even doing a compile often
helps code completion out. Might explain your symptoms.
