Just wanted to chime in here. i have been a developer for 8+ years on
practically every IDE and/or lack of out there. each one has its
caveats and to say that one is better than the rest... well in my
opinion you are selling yourself short. the current working env for
Xcode is based off of gcc and unix. given that other than the big
dollar (overly priced behemoth) code-warrior there is not another that
comes close to being able to accomplish what Xcode can do in this env.
it offers flexibility out the yin AND yank for C, objective-C and the
c++ derivatives. now java is coming along inside the IDE and is
progressing from what i can see. in the past year it is getting better.
what i like/love about Xcode:
1) free (how can you beat that even with a stick) - this has opened the
door for more open-source developers to get their feet wet with apple.
name another IDE this powerful in any environment for that price, no
demos please :)
2) an actual Interface Builder that does work. it reminds me a bit of
using Visual C++ 1.5 and 2.0 release but it is there.
3) complete control over the building WITHOUT having to make sense and
hand edit Makefiles. i have been through the torture of handediting
upwards of 25 Makefiles for building a project, no thank you! that is
how i got VERY proficient w/ vi. You can do it from within the Xcode
env and not have to drop out to hand edit, it is there you just have to
spend some time with it.
what i want:
to be able to add plugins to Xcode i.e. SlickEdit and others.
i always think that things could be better but i would say that apple
has started down the correct path and 1.5 released to us freebie
junkies today is a very nice update! the backwards project bugs are
there but all in all a nice build! thanks apple!
flame away!
ken;
