Personally, I vote for the "yet another split view" approach, although
it has its limits.
The problem here, if I may generalize, is that the Aqua interface
doesn't properly support disassembly and reassembly of various window
components (frames, panes, what-have-you). Then this wouldn't even be
an issue. One could merely take one or more components and drop them
into a window (or drop one window onto another window to merge them)
as you can with tool palettes in Photoshop. Editors, consoles, file
browsers et al could be cloned ad infinitum and reorganized to suit
any whim.
I guess I should file this as an OS X GUI enhancement. Would this
require some kind of layout manager?
