I need to manually check in Xcode project files to our source code control system (Clearcase). I'm guessing that I just need to check in the .pbxproj file and that I can safely ignore the other files in the .xcode directory and the build directory ?

Correct.

Are there any problems with this approach ?

No.

The only thing to be aware of is that the .pbxuser files track per-user information (like breakpoints, bookmarks, custom executables and per-project build locations). None are ciritical, but many are quite useful.
