OK, I think I've misunderstood somewhat. To clarify, our CVS *server*
is most definitely 1.11.2 - which is running on a Linux box. And I
think it is the server version that is significant, as the client is
"built in". I suspect that my local CVS version is irrelevant because
our CVS repository is remote.

Upgrading cvs 1.11.17 solved these problems for me. The documentation
in Eclipse specifically says that it requires CVS 1.11.x or later.

I don't believe that this is true. I've been using CVS "1.10
`Halibut'" for the last eighteen months with Eclipse. I use Eclipse
almost exclusively for CVS operations.
The only issue that I've run into is
<https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=45642>, which I don't
believe is related to the version of CVS in use.
