Toolbar search field... how does it work?

How does the toolbar search field work in 1.5? Before I type in it, it contains the grayed-out words "File Name". Entering a file name in this window and hitting return has no effect. Entering a string that I know appears in the current file and hitting return has no effect. So what is supposed to be the effect?
