While we are on this topic is there anyone who can comment on the
*experience* of using subversion (and who is also not "biased" by
being on their development team!).
The news stories on the web are giving subversion good press, but I
prefer to hear about experience rather than prospects... In principle
it sounds an improvement on CVS, but can anyone comment on the
reality and how it compares with the other products mentioned in this
thread?
The subversion website indicates that a candidate release is out and
that the first full release is due later this month.

I'd say you should look at both Perforce and CVS. And go with Perforce
if you can afford it.
There are other solutions out now, including Subversion and Arch. I
haven't used them and they're still in development, so I'm not really
willing to trust my source code to them.
