Is ProjectBuilder supposed to read Xcode files?

I tried loading up an Xcode file with PB - it went into the '.xcode' project directory and indeed there is the requisite '.pbxproj' file but no go when opening it. Are these files not backward-compatible? I would have thought PB would open them and just ignore the extra settings, seeing as they are XML-a-like.
