I had the same experience. Thanks for explaining why it was happening.
If you turn on Icons & Text in View > Customize Toolbar, you'll see that the
trick icon is called the "Editing Mode" button. I once knew what it was for,
and then forgot.
It happened to me because I accidentally click the Editing Mode button just
about every time I click on a background editing window to bring it to the
front. It's located in the upper right hand corner, which is often the only
corner peeking out from behind foreground windows. I think maybe these
toolbar buttons should not be "click-through" buttons.
