Joar,
Before we get too far off track, Jonathan's response was directed
towards a different user (Robert Love), who was having problems just
getting SCM/CVS set up and running in Xcode. The "comparing two files"
problem was a different person's problem. Hopefully both people have
gotten things to work to their satisfaction.

But should he really need to have to enable SCM to be able to compare
two local files?
Perhaps he does, in the current version of Xcode (it seems like that is
the case), but IMO that would be worth a bug report / feature request.

Sounds like you missed the step that enables SCM in XCode - I know I
did.
Click on your project in the left-hand "Groups and Files" pane. Hit
Cmd-I.
At the bottom of the General page is a checkbox for 'Enable SCM'. Hit
it.
