Weak linking? Or what?

OK, so I had this Makefile that I used as a guide for creating a new XCode project. Created the project, mucked about with some settings, which was (in hindsight)probably a bad idea, being an XCode newbie and all, but hey, the project built and linked, and I was able to debug it, so no problem.
Then I check the project into CVS, and someone else checks it out. When he tries to link, he gets 2 link errors. "Huh; mine didn't do that." After several "WTF" days of trying to figure this out, I finally compare to the original Makefile, and HEY, there's one file missing. OK, mystery solved. Sort of.
What is the XCode or project or target setting that allowed ME to build/link/debug with missing symbols, whereas HE couldn't get past the link phase?
