For either of these, WebObjects itself is probably not the best choice
in that the request/response loop is really focused on dealing with the
idiosyncrasies of HTTP.

There are a bunch of protocol implementations in Java and you could
certainly use EO with them to retain all of the benefits therein.

If you are open to considering other solutions, you might want to have
a look at Twisted -- http://www.twistedmatrix.com/ -- in that it is an
'internet event processing system' that happens to implement both SMTP
and POP, among many other protocols.  Very cool software -- via PyObjC,
it integrates quite nicely into Cocoa apps, too.
