Shareware and open source are not the same thing. Joseph's on the mark here.
Reverse engineering someone else's application is in most cases illegal and
violates most "fair use" laws.
OTOH there are tons of open source titles out there that you can download
and build and "tweek" to your hearts content. I suggest you take a look at
<http://www.idevgames.com> for some of the koolest titles you'll ever want
to play with. And perhaps in a year or two you might have a program to
contribute back to the community. ;-)
