I seem to recall that Project Builder had a pr. header check mark which told wether or not it should go to the private or public headers directory of the framework being build.

Does a similar feature exist in Xcode? or should I just use custom "Copy Files" build phases?
Maybe this is what you want: in your Groups & File pane, select the Target. Then in you file list pane which lists the files for that target you should see a Role column that allows you to choose between private, public, and project.
